Organisation Overview: New Life Stories (NLS) is a registered charity that supports children and families affected by parental incarceration. Since 2014, NLS has focused on breaking the intergenerational cycle of incarceration by strengthening parent–child relationships, supporting caregivers, and ensuring children have equal opportunities to grow, learn, and thrive. NLS works with families across three stages —inside prison, at home, and during reintegration through its holistic Family Strengthening Programme.
Brief Description: The intern will support New Life Stories Programme including the pilot Mama’s Bae Programme by assisting with programme documentation, research, Befriender Circle facilitation, and administrative tasks. They will gain exposure to Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and restorative approaches, learning how to engage Befrienders, including desisters, in supporting incarcerated pregnant mothers while in prison and after release.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Support programme documentation and refinement for Mama’s Bae
Facilitate Befriender Circles and restorative sessions with volunteers, including desisters
Assist in small-scale research and outcome evaluation
Manage administrative tasks, logistics, and basic budget tracking
Draft, edit, and format reports, proposals, and presentations
Contribute to programme coordination, and community-building activities
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
To be exposed to community-building approaches such as Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and restorative practices within a befriending programme
To be able to participate in Befriender Circles, building relational skills with Befrienders, including desisters, and released mothers
To apply a research lens in programme evaluation, including documenting outcomes, analysing data, and supporting evidence-based programme improvements
To participate in programme coordination, volunteer engagement, and community-building activities
To learn how to foster trust and relationships between Befrienders, including desisters and released mothers, strengthening a sustainable circle of care
To gain knowledge in volunteer management, child- and family-centred practices, and social service programme development
Duration of Internship: 6 months
Daily Working Hours: Mon-Fri, 10.00am - 6.00pm
Will this internship require weekend work?: Flexible - weekend work may be required depending on operational needs
Requirements (if any):
Strong interest in social causes and community development
Willing to work with vulnerable communities
Basic research skills or interest in learning programme evaluation methods
