Organisation Overview: Life Community Services Society seeks to affirm, nurture, and develop the intrinsic value of the individual to the fullest potential and inculcate love and develop respect within the family. LCSS focuses on social and community work like mentoring children, youths and families, and the provision of before and after-school care. We also partner with like-minded social service agencies to provide effective care for the less advantaged children and their families.
Brief Description: The Friends of Children and Youth Programme supports children & youth whose parent(s) are presently or formerly incarcerated. It provides casework management, social, educational & care support, with the goal of helping these young individuals overcome adversity & thrive despite challenging family circumstances. FOCY aims to:
• Increase resilience in children & youth
• Reduce the risk of intergenerational offending
• Promote positive development through mentorship, care & community engagement
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Casework and Client Support
• Assist caseworkers in client engagement, home visits, and follow-up activities.
• Support children and families through befriending, mentoring, and administrative tasks related to case management.
2. Programme and Event Support
• Help plan and execute enrichment programmes, learning journeys, workshops, outings and group activities for children and youth.
• Facilitate sessions or assist with logistics during school holidays and special events and outings.
3. Administrative and Research Tasks
• Support documentation, data entry, and simple research on child/youth development topics.
• Assist in monitoring and evaluation of programme outcomes.
4. Community Engagement
• Contribute to outreach initiatives and events that promote awareness and support for families affected by incarceration.
• Collaborate with volunteers, schools, and community partners where appropriate.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
1. To gain hands-on experience in the social service sector, supporting children and families impacted by incarceration and contributing to meaningful change in their lives.
2. To understand the challenges faced by children and youth with incarcerated parents.
3. To develop practical skills in casework and group work support.
4. To gain exposure to programme planning, implementation, and evaluation.
5. To strengthen communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills in working with vulnerable populations.
6. To appreciate the role of community partnerships and holistic interventions in the social service landscape.
Duration of Internship: 6 months
Daily Working Hours: Mon-Fri, 9.00am - 6.00pm
Will this internship require weekend work?: Occasional weekend work for special events/projects
Requirements (if any):
Students from Pre-University (JC/Polytechnic/ITE)backgrounds or Diploma programmes in areassuch as Social Work, Psychology, Community Development, Education, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
Passion for working with children and youth.
Empathy and sensitivity toward families facing social stigma.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Willingness to learn and take initiative.
