Organisation Overview: Life Community Ltd. seeks to affirm, nurture, and develop the intrinsic value of the individual to the fullest potential and inculcate love and develop respect within the family. Life Community focuses on social and community work like mentoring children, youths and families, and the provision of before and after-school care. We also partner with like-minded social service agencies to provide effective care for the less advantaged children and their families.
Brief Description: The Friends of Children and Youth (FOCY) Programme supports children & youth, 6 to 21 years old, whose parent(s) are presently or formerly incarcerated. It provides casework management, social, educational & care support, with the goal of helping these young individuals overcome adversity and thrive despite challenging family circumstances.
Roles and Responsibilities:
FOCY aims to build internal capacities and external support through these four key goals:
Children, youth and their families can manage emotions and stress positively
Children and youth develop healthy relationships with trusted adults or mentors
Children and youth are more engaged in school, with improved attendance
Children and youth experience strong, caring, and trusting family relationships
Roles and Responsibilities
Programme and Event Support
Help plan and execute enrichment programmes, learning journeys, workshops, outings and group activities for children and youth
Facilitate sessions or assist with logistics during school holidays and special events and outings
Casework and Client Support
Assist caseworkers in client engagement, home visits, and follow-up activities
Support children and families through befriending, mentoring, and administrative tasks related to case management
Administrative and Research Tasks
Support documentation, data entry, and simple research on child/youth development topics
Assist in monitoring and evaluation of programme outcomes
Community Engagement
Contribute to outreach initiatives and events that promote awareness and support for families affected by incarceration
Collaborate with volunteers, schools, and community partners where appropriate
Support organizational events to promote, fundraise, and build awareness for Life Community
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
To gain hands-on experience in the social service sector, supporting children and families impacted by incarceration and contributing to meaningful change in their lives
To understand the challenges faced by children and youth with incarcerated parents
To develop practical skills in casework and group work support
To gain exposure to programme planning, implementation, and evaluation
To strengthen communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills in working with vulnerable populations
To appreciate the role of community partnerships and holistic interventions in the social service landscape
Duration of Internship: 6 months
Daily Working Hours: Mon-Fri, 9.00am - 6.00pm
Will this internship require weekend work?: Occasional weekend work for special events/projects
Requirements (if any):
Students from Polytechnic or University or Diploma programmes in areas such as Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Counselling, Community Development, Education, or related fields are encouraged to apply
Passion for working with children and youth
Comfortable to engage with caregivers and incarcerated parent
Empathy and sensitivity toward families facing social stigma
Good communication and teamwork skills
Willingness to learn and take initiative
