Organisation Overview: SalvageGarden Makerspace is dedicated to developing user-friendly, affordable, and open-source assistive technologies through 3D printing and local manufacturing. A volunteer-driven non-profit founded in 2022, SalvageGarden works closely with persons with disabilities, caregivers, makers, and others to co-create solutions that enhance mobility, communication, and daily living. Together, we strive to improve accessibility, inclusion, and quality of life for people with diverse needs.
Brief Description: Gain hand-on experience in community building and inclusive design. This role focuses on collaborating with volunteers through weekly Make Inclusive Tech programmes to support the design, prototyping, and testing of assistive devices through 3D printing and other methods. You will also support ad-hoc events and workshops with the public, social service organisations, and schools. Through this role, you will develop skills in stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and inclusive design.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Support the running of programmes by handling logistics, helping to facilitate sessions, and engaging participants, volunteers, and partner organisations
Provide general programme support such as maintaining records, monitoring timelines, scheduling meetings, and keeping communication organised
Learn and apply maker skills (e.g. 3D printing) to support the design, prototyping, and testing of assistive devices. (Introductory workshops are available through the National Library Board)
Support the development of programme strategies and objectives to facilitate the expansion of SalvageGarden’s activities
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
To be exposed to community building in a volunteer-driven organisation
To gain knowledge of assistive technology and inclusive design
To be able to apply core workplace skills, including independent learning, time management, curiosity, adaptability, and communication
To develop confidence in the workplace
Duration of Internship: 6 months
Daily Working Hours: Sun-Thurs, 9.00am - 6.00pm
Will this internship require weekend work?: Regular weekend work as part of normal schedule
