Organisation Overview: Nature Society Singapore is dedicated to the appreciation, conservation, study and enjoyment of the natural heritage in Singapore. Brief Description: Every Singaporean a Naturalist is NSS’s flagship citizen science and nature education programme aimed at nurturing participants’ hearts and minds to appreciate and care for nature, and ultimately lead them to support advocacy and conservation of the natural environment. We do so by engaging and providing opportunities for students, teachers, and eventually the wider public, to explore, learn, understand and grow their love for nature.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Education & Liaison
Assist NSS ESN project officers with training sessions, including the teaching of species identification to participants, where necessary.
Assist participating organisations with monitoring sessions, including ensuring the following of methodology and identification of species, where necessary.
Respond to queries from participating organisations regarding monitoring and uploading of data, if any.
Review training and monitoring materials to provide recommendations for improvement. After which, edit and refine training and monitoring materials, where necessary.
Events
Assist in event preparation. For example:
Assess and recommend online platforms and/ or physical sites for events including recce.
Draft and prepare event information and publicity materials.
Draft and prepare event forms (registration, submission, feedback, etc.).
Assist in event running, including logistics set-up and volunteer management.
Communications
Content creation, curation, design and follower engagement for social media and website.
Content creation and design for school and partner engagement.
Research
Analyse the collected monitoring data (for spatial and temporal trends). Using suitable figures and tables, prepare and present findings in reports and presentation slides.
Create and share any files, including statistical software scripts, used for the analysis of collected monitoring data and generation of suitable figures and tables.
Review and suggest improvements to monitoring data and methodology for its finding to be more scientifically meaningful and/or statistically robust.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
To be exposed to working in an NGO
To gain knowledge in urban conservation and impacts made
To learn how to manage programmes, stakeholders and participants
To be able to be an independent worker and a team player
Duration of Internship: 6 months
Daily Working Hours: 9.00am - 6.00pm
Work Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Thursday
Minimum Qualification: Polytechnic diploma or professional qualifications
Requirements (if any):
Matriculated undergraduate from local universities
Interest in local biodiversity as well as passion for environmental issues and nature conservation
Effective team player as well as independent and resourceful self-starter
Excellent communication and writing skills
Preferred Background in Environmental Science/ Studies, Life Science, or related discipline
Proven ability to identify common species of birds and butterflies in Singapore
Proven event management or teaching experience
Design and/ or publicity experience
